Ultrasound imaging of the scrotum is the primary imaging method used to evaluate disorders of the testicles, epididymis (tubes immediately next to the testicles that collect sperm made by the testicle) and scrotum. It is a noninvasive medical test that is safe and painless that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR SCROTAL ULTRASOUND
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You will need to remove all clothing and jewelry in the area to be examined.
No other preparation is required.

Eat normally
Preparation
Start by emptying the bladder 2 hours before appointment, then drink 32 ounces of water.
Timing
Finish drinking all 32 ounces ONE HOUR BEFORE your exam.
Restriction
Do not empty your bladder before your exam.
INDICATIONS FOR SCROTAL ULTRASOUND
- Abnormal testicular consistency
- suspected testicular tumors
- scrotal or inguinal hernia
- hydrocele
- spermatic cord hydrocele
- extraperitoneal
- inguinal lymphadenopathy
- hematospermia
- reproductive failure
ULTRASOUND FOR THE SCROTUM IS TYPICALLY USED TO:
- determine whether a mass in the scrotum felt by the patient or doctor is cystic or solid and its location.
- diagnose results of trauma to the scrotal area.
- diagnose causes of testicular pain or swelling such as inflammation or torsion.
- evaluate the cause of infertility such as varicocele.
- look for the location of undescended testis.
